I'll start with a personal one actually. A couple of years ago Chiller channel had a Dare2Direct contest and asked for submissions of short horror films. My sister and her family, being the bizarre people they are (no comments from the peanut gallery) produced this one, called Emily. It stars my sister, brother-in-law and niece. They wrote it, directed it, filmed it (with only 1 camera!), dubbed the sound effects and my sister did the make up. They didn't even place, and personally, I think theirs was much better than the ones that did. Not that I'm biased or anything.
