Today we had Bela Kitty put to sleep. He was 17 1/2 years old. We'd had him since he was 3 months old and Ailish was 5. He had been diabetic for the last 8 years or so and got insulin shots twice a day. He didn't seem to mind it at all. Over the last couple of months he went completely blind, but still got around. He could find his way up and down the stairs, to the food and to the bed. Over the last few days he really seemed to struggle with just standing up. He also seemed to have some...dementia or Alzheimer's, I guess. He would circle over and over in one spot. He was also completely incontinent, but he didn't seem to be in any pain. I guess part of me feels guilty. Did I just do it because I was tired of cleaning up pee?
Big hole in my heart today.

I'm so very sorry, T'. You didn't do it because you were tired of cleaning up after him. You did it because you loved him and didn't want to see him suffer even though he wasn't showing signs of pain. I completely understand your misery. I still agonize over my decision to have Hercules (the dog I had for several years and gave to my mom only to inherit him when she passed away) put to sleep last year. When pets are with us for that long, they cease to be pets and become children. Just know that Bela is watching over you and chasing clouds of catnip. Hugs to you. I know it's a small comfort, but it's the best I can do.
